The malaise affecting energy prices was potentially felt in the wider commodities market today, with one bearish investor buying a large number of put contracts on Anglo-Australian miner BHP Billiton. The play could also have been a bet on a China slowdown, according to strategists. In Europe, hedge funds and institutional investors have been going long Eurostoxx 50 Dec. 20 dividend futures and shorting SX5E futures in an effort to get exposure to the outperformance of long-term maturities in dividend futures over the historical beta to their underlying index. Interest in mid-to-long-term maturities in dividend futures has spiked in recent weeks following the equity market selloff last month.
