​Pensions and superannuation funds tentatively dipping their toes into the alternative risk premia markets had a terrible year. The higher volatility has had negative effects on a number of their strategies. Funds they may have been allocating to have seen far greater declines than expected. The performance of external managers varies greatly, while the underlying definition of many factors is confusing across the market place. This has left many in crisis, leading them to ask if they should be in the market at all.
