Philip ‘Phil’ Szewczyk, a partner and portfolio manager at Plinth Capital and an alum of Malachite Capital Management and Barclays Capital, died in New York on April 20. Szewczyk, 31 years old, was a widely respected volatility portfolio manager and derivatives professional. A memorial has been posted online here.

Szewczyk, born in 1989, received an HBA from Western University, studying finance at the Richard Ivey School of Business with a focus on math, economics, and derivatives. He held his first role in capital markets at TD Securities before joining Barclays Capital as an assistant v.p. in equity derivatives. At Barclays, Szewczyk focused on the development of the firm’s volatility derivative solutions for institutional clients including hedge funds, pensions, and asset managers. He spent four years at Barclays in the firm’s equity and funds structured markets group.

In 2015, Szewczyk joined Malachite as an investment associate, where he worked closely with Malachite’s co-founders. During the latter part of 2019, Phil joined Plinth Capital in New York as a partner and portfolio manager. At Plinth, he focused on arbitrage strategies and the opportunity set in alternative risk transfer.

Our condolences and thoughts are with Phil’s family at this time.
