Marco Salerno is principal, total portfolio at HOOPP. He works on both the theoretical and practical aspects of factor-based investing as well as total fund management, including strategic asset allocation, asset-liability management, portfolio construction, and investment research.

Prior to joining HOOPP, he earned his Ph.D. in finance at the University of Toronto, Rotman School of Management.

His research interests are related to empirical and theoretical asset pricing with a focus on portfolio allocation. He developed a new factor in the equity market by leveraging detailed consumption data to identify stable sectors and using natural language processing (NLP) techniques. He also developed a state-level metric for gauging economic policy uncertainty, used to assess private assets’ risk exposure to state-specific policy changes in the U.S. He publishes research in academic journals on asset allocation and factor investing. His work has been recognized with various international awards.
